Why Emergency Medicine — and Why Train at Oak Hill

Perspective from the Associate Program Director

Emergency Medicine is one of the most dynamic and impactful careers in medicine. As emergency physicians, we are entrusted with caring for patients during some of the most critical and uncertain moments of their lives. Every shift requires us to think broadly, act decisively, and work collaboratively to diagnose and treat everything from minor illnesses to life-threatening emergencies.

What makes Emergency Medicine truly unique is the combination of clinical variety, rapid decision-making, procedural skills, and teamwork. Emergency physicians must quickly recognize life-threatening conditions, stabilize critically ill patients, and coordinate care across multiple specialties—all while maintaining compassion and clear communication with patients and their families.

For medical students who enjoy problem solving, high-acuity medicine, hands-on procedures, and working as part of a team, Emergency Medicine offers an incredibly fulfilling career. It is a specialty where your training prepares you to handle the unexpected and where every shift presents an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone's life.

But choosing Emergency Medicine is only part of the journey. Equally important is choosing the right residency program—one that will challenge you, support you, and prepare you to become a confident and capable emergency physician.

At the HCA/USF Morsani College of Medicine Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Oak Hill Hospital, our mission is to train physicians who are clinically excellent, compassionate, and ready to practice anywhere. Our program offers what we proudly describe as:

“Big City Training. Community-Based Care.”

Our residents are exposed to a wide range of pathology and high-acuity cases while training in a supportive, close-knit learning environment where faculty know our residents personally and are deeply invested in their success.

We emphasize hands-on learning, progressive autonomy, and strong mentorship. Residents work side-by-side with experienced emergency physicians who are committed to teaching and developing the next generation of leaders in Emergency Medicine. Because of our program’s culture and structure, residents have meaningful opportunities to grow as clinicians, educators, and advocates for their patients.

Equally important to us is the culture we build within our department. Emergency Medicine is a team sport, and we believe that strong teams create strong physicians. At Oak Hill, we prioritize a collaborative learning environment where residents support one another, faculty remain approachable and engaged, and wellness is valued as an essential part of training.

We often describe our program using a simple concept that reflects our values:

HEART

H – Humanism

We treat patients, families, and colleagues with compassion and respect.

E – Excellence in Education

We are committed to teaching and continuous learning.

A – Accountability

We take ownership of our patients, our training, and our professional growth.

R – Resilience

Emergency Medicine is demanding, and we develop the strength and adaptability needed to thrive.

T – Teamwork

Great emergency physicians are built through collaboration and trust.

These values guide how we train our residents and how we care for our patients.

For medical students considering Emergency Medicine, we encourage you to look for a program where you will be challenged clinically, supported by mentors, and surrounded by a culture that values both professional growth and personal well-being.

If you are looking for a program that combines high-acuity training, strong mentorship, and a supportive community culture, we invite you to experience what makes Oak Hill special.

Because here, we believe in training outstanding emergency physicians…

“…because we care with HEART.”
